American Idol: Dollywood and Hollywood Combine

American Idol Top 9 and Dolly Parton

kicked the night off with an unbelievable April Fool’s joke just for fun, before it got around to the business of honoring mentor Dolly Parton. I will say, however, that I think Simon Cowell would be fabulous on The Moment of Truth - and ratings would be through the roof.

Singer/actress Dolly Parton is a superstar, award-winning and top-selling, both in the box office and in the recording studio. But she’s still a southern girl with charm, admits to wearing false eyelashes and even wigs, and maintains that endearing girlish giggle no matter how many years pass. What’s not to love about Dolly? As a mentor, she proved sweet and encouraging with all the contestants. Were the judges just as kind?

Chris Cornell Reacts to American Idol Song Choice

David Cook - Billie Jean

rock-n-roller David Cook sang his way into the Top 9, but in the doing may have upset some Chris Cornell fans.

Cook played Cornell’s version of the Michael Jackson classic “Billie Jean” during , earning him high praise from judges. But the Chris Cornell fans weren’t so pleased. After Cook’s performance, all three Idol judges praised his creativity. Randy Jackson called him “original” and “bold,” Paula Abdul said he was “brilliant,” and even Simon Cowell found it “brave” and “amazing.” Here’s the rub: there wasn’t anything original in either the arrangement of the song, or the way Cook sang it.

Weeks of grueling eliminations, group practice sessions, and Ford commercial shoots all boil down to the Top 10 on . Like it or not, this group will go on tour and join the pantheon of former Idols, forever to be interviewed, followed, and gossiped about for as long as the public finds them interesting. They were told to choose songs recorded in the year of their birth, given one of the world’s biggest stages, and set forth to either astound, or aggravate, all of us. So…how’d they do?

American Idol: Another Post-Beatles Elimination

American Idol Top 11

The second post-Beatles elimination night on began with the usual name-dropping, as host Ryan Seacrest named such megastars as Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Neil Diamond - all of whom are slated to be mentors during the upcoming weeks. The song-writing contest was touted again, where anyone and everyone can submit a tune to be sung during the season finale. The Top 11 Idols then launched into a Beatles medley, including “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Here, There and Everywhere” in the mishmash.

American Idol: Beatles Night, The Sequel

American Idol Top 11

Tuesday saw the evening where, according to host , “the number one show in the country celebrates the number one band of all time.” I see nothing in this statement to debate, but the second week of Beatles on did offer some disappointments.

American Idol: First of the Top 12 Sent Packing

Top 12 Idol

Elimination night on began with more cross-promotion. This time, it was Jim Carrey (star of an upcoming 20th Century FOX movie) in a weird elephant suit. During his banter with host Ryan Seacrest, the movie star cried out, “I love the show, I love the contestants.” Me, too…up to a point.

This promotional effort (which is probably totally unnecessary - the movie will bank big bucks whether Carrey parades around in a silly suit or not) was quickly followed by an announcement. “We’re changing the theme!” announced, claiming that an avalanche of telephone calls and e-mails led the show to feature tunes from the Beatles next week as well. I’d like to venture a guess that the tenor of those comments was mostly in the I-didn’t-hear-what-I-wanted-to-hear vein and that next week, we’ll hear much more of the White Album. Just a guess, though.

Next came a quick early Beatles medley of songs, a mishmash of “All My Lovin’,” “I Feel Fine,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “Help!” as performed by the . But as soon as the music faded, it was time to get to the real business of the evening: getting rid of one of them.

American Idol: Twelve Top Performances?

American Idol's Top 12

It’s been hyped for weeks, anticipated since last year’s Idol was crowned, and advertised until TV watchers can hardly stand the promos. Tuesday night it finally arrived - the performances from ‘s Top 12. Was it worth two hours of programming?

The night kicked off with the big debut of a big new stage, where in an odd setup the band is suspended and the judges are shoved behind some of the crowd. Host Ryan Seacrest showed off the new lights and interiors as fans screamed, then dropped the bomb that this performance night would be melodic with songs from the famed Lennon-McCartney songbook. My breath caught, and immediately I was excited. Surely one of the Idols would be bold, brave, brash…surely, one of them would sing something from the darker, more politically-minded years of the Beatles. Surely, we would hear some hot 70s-era vocals.

This Week on TV (3/10-3/16)

The Real Housewives of New York City

(You can view TV Envy’s Post-Strike Television Schedule here.)

MONDAY (3/10)
  • The Bachelor: Where Are They Now? (ABC, 8pm):  “Highlights from past seasons include segments catching up with past bachelors (Andrew Firestone and Aaron Buerge) and former contestants.”  So the whole point of the show is to say there is no point to this show.  Look at how successful it’s been!
  • Canterbury’s Law (FOX, 8pm):  Series premiere.  “Julianna Margulies stars as a maverick defense lawyer who plays by her own rules to help the falsely accused.”  I’m guessing will still be on long after this program goes off the air.
  • New Amsterdam (FOX, 9pm):  Regular day and time.  If you didn’t watch last Tuesday or Thursday, I’m sure you won’t tonight either.
  • October Road (ABC, 9pm):  Special time.  In the season (series?) finale, “Eddie’s ex-girlfriend shows up to reconnect with him, causing problems in his relationship with Janet.”  Since we may never get a satisfactory resolution from this ratings-starved show, let’s just pretend Janet kicks her ass.

American Idol: Top 12 Revealed

American Idol Top 12

’s Top 12 is a big milestone for the show. It marks the beginning of Ford commercials, brings contestants one step closer to the summer-long Idol tour, and usually symbolizes the cutting away of dead wood. But I’ll go ahead and say it - I’m not pleased with the way it all went down. Let’s re-cap.

The night kicked off with a fantastic performance from Season 6 runner-up , who saucily performed “How Many Words.” He shared a few comments with host Ryan Seacrest before he quickly departed, so that everyone could turn their attentions to twelve empty chairs lined up on the stage.
